I haven’t updated this blog for a while. Sorry, I just can’t keep my promise because it actually is a lot of work, and I have school and work to deal with everyday.

STEP 4. Syntax
–(기) 전/
Before…becomes,
1. Example
이 시간이 가버리기 전
– the main verb here is 가버리다
– by changing the basic verb가버리다 to 가버리기 전, we can express the meaning of “before the time passes and fades…”
– You must add ~기 to the verb stem of the preceding verb, 전 may also be used following indications of time as well:
- 5분 전: 5 minutes ago
- 5시간 전: 5 hours ago (*note 5시 전 would mean before 5’o clock)
- 5일 전: 5 days ago
- 5주 전: 5 weeks ago
- 2년 전: 5 years ago
– it is important to note that “이 시간이 가버리기 전” is not a full sentence (just like in English), we can complete the sentence in as many ways as you like:
- 이 시간이 가버리기 전에 빨리 내 옆으로 와봐.
- 이 시간이 가버리기 전에 지금을 즐기자!
2. Application
– Here, we are creating a brand new verb by adding -기 전to the stem of a verb. Let’s demonstrate the process on the verb 오다.
– Now we have 오기 전. Easy, right?
– We can also do this with descriptive verbs as well, such as 편하다 -> 편하기 전, and also with the -지다 verbs (that we learned earlier) as well, such as 편해지다 -> 편해지기 전
3. Practice
Complete the sentences with the structure taught above
